Ian Spooner joined Greensboro Youth Soccer as Director of Player Development in 2006.

Ian comes to us from the Roanoke Valley Youth Soccer Club where he was the Technical Director. His primary responsibility was to organize and instruct the Roanoke Youth Academy (U8 through U10), including formulating coaching manuals, hiring staff, and education of coaches. He also acted as an age group director for U13-U14 boys’ and girls’ premier and classic level teams. He was responsible for conducting technical sessions for all teams in the club and coaching three premier teams.

Ian was also heavily involved with the Virginia Olympic Development Program. He was the State Head Coach in 2006. He evaluated and coached premier players from the state He was also the Western District Head Coach/Coordinator in 200). He was responsible for hiring staff, securing facility use, promoting goals of Virginia ODP, and coaching premier players from Western District.

Before coming to Roanoke Valley Ian was an assistant coach with the Radford University women's soccer team from 2001 – 2004. From 1998 – 2001 he was the head men ’s and women’s soccer coach at Division III Bridgewater College. He developed the women’s program while there and also led the men’s program to the most success in school history. As a player Ian was an All-American at Radford University in 1995. He was the Big South Conference MVP in 1994 and 1995. He was first team All-Conference and first team All-South Atlantic in 1991, 1992, 1994, and 1995. He was the Radford University captain in 1995. He played professional soccer for eight year in the USL and in England.

  • USSF B License, January 2006.
  • NSCAA Associate Staff Coach, 2000 – present.
  • NSCAA Premier Diploma, January 1999.
  • NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, January 1998.
  • NSCAA National Diploma, January 1997.
  • English FA Coaching Badge, June 1989.
